Our Greatest Breakthrough

The greatest breakthrough has been the sourcing of a cheap, robust, coated polyester substrate where the coating enables one to print RAS faces on a wide range of inexpensive wide-bed digital printers which use dye-based inks which are water-soluble. 

Encapsulating equipment of that size is expensive, so very few companies can do it in-house - which limited the market.  Also, encapsulation is expensive.  You couldn't laminate one side only as the differential movement (caused by changes in temperature and moisture) between the 2 materials inevitably causes an unacceptable degree of curling. 

With encapsulation, the encapsulates on either side cancels out the temp. and moisture movement.  This new substrate somehow locks in the ink to produce a smudge-proof print, so it doesn't need to be encapsulated.  Now all the smaller signage companies with a Hewlett Packard, Encad or Epson 36”-wide digital inkjet printer can compete head-on with the large companies. The great thing is that the print quality of the cheaper printers is superb!

Banner Stand - Base Stabilisers

• We have perfected the technology to mould the clear plastic end plates instead of machine-cutting them, as is currently done.
• We've been able to strengthen those areas where strength is required, and to remove material where strength is not an issue.
• The end plates are moulded from PETG, which is an extremely expensive but top-of-the-range polymer, used in the front panels of Coca-Cola vending machines, as unlike Perspex, it's very tough.  The Coke panels are designed to withstand attack with a sledge-hammer.
• The mouldings incorporate a foot, which can be swung down if necessary, and is designed to prevent rocking.  There'll be a foot on each end, as there are two end plates. (We must mention here that rocking has never actually been a problem but in a few instances people have asked the question, and this addition means that we no longer need to convince them that there IS no problem) .
• The moulding has enabled us to make the end plates look more aesthetically-pleasing with rounded edges etc.

Other Design Advances

We're now casting the internal rubber band of the portable display equipment, making it into something that looks like a fan belt. In the process, we were able to reformulate the rubber compound to give us a rubber with the perfect degree of elasticity. 

The net effect is that we have a more robust material which will not degrade as it's not subject to UV light, and it needs fewer turns to create the desired tension - which has had a dramatic effect on the faces as the banner faces are now 100% flat.  They look magnificent!

Next Steps

We'll build a mould to manufacture the central core of the banner stand out of an extremely robust high-tech polymer.  We haven't finalised the design yet, but one option is to have the stabilising feet on hinges so that we can reduce the physical dimensions of the unit to two-thirds its current width.
